Colgate:

Colgate is known for producing the highest quality crib mattresses in the country. The company has received many industry awards and is proud to be among the first members of the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association.
Sol Wolkin opened Colgate on March 5th 1955 with a $1500.00 loan from his brother-in-law. His first factory was in a small 4000 square foot building on Ponce de Leon Avenue near the old Ponce de Leon Stadium home of the Atlanta Crackers.
The business has grown steadily since its inception. In January of 1969, Sol expanded the business into the adjacent 20,000 square foot building on Ponce de Leon Place and then in 1987, Colgate once again expanded into the last remaining attached building on Ponce de Leon Place. Then in 1993, in need of additional space and with no more buildings available on Ponce, Colgate moved into its present 60,000 square foot building located in historic Cabbagetown.
Colgate is presently run by the second and third generation of the Wolkin family. Alan Wolkin the eldest son of Anne and Sol is the president of Colgate. He graduated from Emory University and subsequently received a master's degree from Georgia State University. Richard Wolkin, Colgate's Vice President, returned to help run the family business in 1988, after receiving a PhD from University of Wisconsin and completing a post doctoral fellowship at Dartmouth College. In 2002, Dennis Wolkin, grandson of Anne and Sol and son of Alan Wolkin joined the firm after graduating from Indiana University and subsequently receiving a master's degree from Georgia Tech. He has recently become the Secretary/Treasurer of Colgate. Some fourth generation great grandchildren of Anne and Sol have already become involved in the business by posing in Colgate Mattress photo shoots.
